Barbara Hand Clow

Is the daughter of astrologer Robert Hand.  i read her book and that started the search for Chiron’s meaning.

Zane Stein

Zane Stein jumped on the Chiron boat almost immediately.  He dedicates his site to the asteroid.  He also wrote a book on it.  Of the two, his is better.

Ms Hand-Clow’s book Chiron and the Rainbow Bridge has many interesting ideas, but it ultimately fails as she takes too much from Ceres and gives it Chiron, thus hurting both.  I did like her emphasis on the environment and natural issues, which culminated in the 1970s shortly before Chiron was discovered, but how do I apply that to a horoscope?   Ms Hand-Clow does not really give me much direction there, other than embracing my inner-Unicorn.  I decided to to view the asteroid astrologically and let Chiron unfold for itself as there is little consensus of opinion on it.

               Chiron, Hitler and Jones

American astronomer Charles Kowal  discovered Chiron at Palomar Observatory, on October 18, 1977 at 3:47 PDT. A new moon was about to appear the next day, so the skies were still dark enough so astronomers could detect odd things.  We got the longitudinal coordinates for Palomar from NASA, though the chart shows San Diego .  This gives us the Ascendant of 15 Virgo, an Ornamental Handkerchief which Dr. Jones writes “preserves meanings and helps perfect action.”

Mental chemistry wise, the Moon is fast highlighting an outward bias and Mercury is almost partile the Sun steadying its focus, thus this is a disciplined approach to learning and interacting with others.   The yod, a favorite configuration, is perfect here, and I drew one from Chiron at 04 Taurus to Jupiter in the 10th at 07 Cancer.  The Apex ends at about Juno at 04 Sagittarius.  Dr. Jones in his book, Number Significance, says the keyword for Juno is Politics or being Polite based on how Juno herself usually turned a deaf ear to her husband Jupiter’s philandering.

Both the husband and spouse are part of this configuration interestingly enough but it is the midpoint that shoots perpendicularly from Juno to to Gemini 04 that is the key to Chiron’s meaning, “Holly and Mistletoe” a symbol of maximum encouragement to the differences in human personality by allowing continual stimulation to all resources of imagination and spiritual appreciation.  Reversed, Dr. Jones writes about Miss Wheeler’s symbol, “obsession with superficialities”.

Dr. Jones summed this up with his maxim of “respect for personality,” or the need not to  judge a  book (i.e. person) by its cover but allowing it to speak for itself.  This requires someone not to prejudicially pigeonhole another by your preconceptions, fears, or misunderstandings but to accept them whole.

Respect for Personality:

Chiron & Adolf Hitler

adolf.png

Herr Hitler did not live while they found Chiron, but he is a good subject for the asteroid.  In his case, we find Chiron intercepted in the ninth house of religion and journalism.  Interception are blocked signs, the sign cannot outwardly manifest itself because of how the chart uses the celestial sphere for erection.  At 06 Cancer 54, Chiron has the symbol of “two faeries on a moonlit night” that Dr. Jones suggests encourages a transforming sensitivity from one’s own light.  Negatively, a senseless retreat to phantasy.  As Chiron is intercepted, the positive meaning is negated and the world of make-believe takes hold.

Worse, Chiron is directly opposite the Moon that is conjunct Jupiter. Both also intercepted, giving him the ability to stir up monsters and demons on command instead of lovely and delightful faeries.  Pity his father did not let him become a painter as he wanted…but that’s another post.  Chiron tells us that Hitler was intolerant of any religion other than his own Superman creation, where he became the Head Prophet in a Cult of Personality.

Respect for Personality:

Chiron & Marc E Jones

Our next case, Marc Edmund Jones, a former Presbyterian minister,  and the Dean of American Astrology, also has Chiron in the Ninth House and in Cancer.  This time Dr. Jones’ Chiron is at 12 Cancer, but is not intercepted and so allowed to shine freely.  The Wheeler symbol is “A Chinese woman nursing a baby with a message” is how life gains meaning from how the person accepts the totality of his existence.  Its keyword is Materialization    Dr. Jones was alive when Chiron was discovered;  he died in 1980.

Dr. Jones spent a whole life devoted to his belief in that Astrology was the hand of God guiding us along, elucidating this message in his book “Astrology, How and Why it works, ” and appropriately enough, and in his most important message — A Respect for Personality.

Campanus House System.

The mathematical brothers Johannes and Matthias Campanus,  born around 1250 AD, created this house method but it did not become popular until about 150 years after their death when Regiomontanus said his system was an improvement to theirs.

What the Campani brothers do is divide the sky into twelve houses using the Prime Vertical instead of the celestial equator, a similar idea to our terrestrial equator .

In both cases,  a great virtual circle intersects the celestial sphere and both hemispheres are equidistant from it.  The difference is in the terrestrial equator these equidistant poles are horizontal, while in the celestial side both halves are vertical.  This causes the equinox.

The table of houses, instead of recording the entire path of the line between houses, gives just the boundary of each house as a single positional line bounding a house across the Ecliptic.  As planets move along  Ecliptic,  unequal houses and interceptions occur.

French-American Dane Rudhyar made this house system popular using for archetypal psychological work; Australian astrologer Bernadette Brady, current president of the AFA,  uses it too for the same reasons.

Major Notes

  • The Ascendant is the first house cusp.
  • The Midheaven  or the Medium Coeli is the tenth house cusp.
  • The Campanus system allows interceptions.
  • Houses are unequal & can vary from 15 to 32 degrees wide.

Regiomontanus & Bogey

For this comparison  we are using our good friend, the late Mike “Bogey” Boguslawski, best known for his Hartford Connecticut television show “On your side.”

Neither system gives Mike any interceptions.  The cuspal house boundaries are different making in the Regiomontanus the Part of Fortune in the eighth, while with Campanus with the Arabian part is the seventh tying his career opportunities to other people: notably his sister Rita (in the fifth house for both).  Other than that, the charts are very similar.

His obit is here.

The Campanus House System and Bogey

The major differences between the two charts are:

  • The Part of Fortune in the Regiomontanus is in the 8th House (death & endings) while in the Campanus it is in the 7th (opportunities from others).
  • Mercury moves from the Regiomontanus’s 5th house (creative  to the Campanus’s 6th house (work & service).

Modern update:  Bogey and Koch

With the modern Koch method, Bogey’s chart changes more than one would think.  The Part of Fortune is now in work and service square religion and higher calling, showing the problem he had with higher radio executives who wanted him to change to a more marketable focus.

Pluto in the eleventh highlights his investigative work as a consumer advocate, similar to fellow Nutmeger Ralph Nader.Bogey though worked on a local scale, even when he moved to L.A.

Prince Leopold George Duncan was the eighth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and the youngest of their sons. Born April 7, 1853, the Royal accoucheur, Dr. John Snow delivered him with the help of chloroform — he was the first of the Queen’s children to be born with her under it. His sister Beatrice, who followed four years later and was the last of the line, also received it as the Queen was trying to popularize the drug and advertise its pain-relieving properties.

The safe arrival of Prince Leopold didn’t silence opposition to obstetric anesthesia altogether, but the Queen’s heartily expressed enthusiasm for pain-free childbirth helped make chloroform use respectable.

Albert wrote that “Leo was jolly and fat” and “no beauty, ” and that set the tone of how the Royal parents treated him — he was left to the care of nannies until his father died on December 14, 1861, at which point the Queen became very taken with her last boy as solace.  She wrote that he was “abnormally pale” but tall, and as  she became close to him that she started to notice he “hemorrhaged” easily.  By the time he was a teenager, the family realized the problem.  He was the first of the British Royal family to have the problem of haemophilia.

The comparison of his chart to his second cousin, the Tsarevich, is interesting.

Leopold, the Duke of Albany, is Bowl with a lip that is formed by the Line of Personality –Saturn in the Ninth House at 16.57 in a week inconjunct aspect to Jupiter in the Fourth at 24.27 giving an interesting emphasis to Jupiter at its throne in Sagittarius.  Jupiter rules the bloody as an excess of it gives enthusiasm. Here in the Fourth House of maternal inheritance, it would agree particularly as Saturn is in the natural house of Sagittarius and lending an almost fatalistic hand to the Duke. As Aries rules the head and governs the Red Ray of Blood, it hints that he would die from a fall to his head & probably die from bleeding profusely from an inherited familial disease, especially as Mars is also found in the house of its Lord.

The Duke also has a prominent stellium in the Eighth house of Legacies and Death with his Sun and Mars the Lord of Aries on its Throne there.  As Aries rules the head, it does hint that injuries to the head could be fatal to the Duke, particularly if while he was travelling (the Sagittarian connection).

Like his cousin the Tsarevich he has a few septiles in his chart.  The first one shows up between Pluto at 0.56 Taurus and his North Node at  21.42 Gemini in the Tenth.  The others are the larger bi-septile aspect, both types that according to Emma Belle Donath¹ suggest a “personal sacrifice”.  One at Mercury at Taurus 08 in the Eighth House to Jupiter in the Fourth at Sagittarius 25 and then from Jupiter again to Venus at Aries 09 Aries in the Seventh.  Mercury has a Virgintile to Venus that has no ominous overtones at all but instead suggests like his older brother Edward, was quite the ladies’ man.

When he died, February 21, 1884 at 3:30 according to his mother’s diary, the Duke of Albany had one Septile active, t from Jupiter and the Galactic Center to his Midheaven at 18.25 Cancer, a Hyperion Symbol of “Guitars and Mandolins” embracing the duality that is  life and the North Node having moved from the Tenth House of aspirations to that of the Ninth and long journeys.

                                          Afternotes

His son,Charles Edward Leopold, his Royal Highness Prince Leopold Charles Edward, inherited his title and became the second Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence and Baron Arklow.  The Duke, called Charlie, was born at Claremont House, near Esher, Surrey, on July 19, 1884. He was the first cousin of King George V (Edward and Leopold were brothers) as well as Kaiser Wilhelm II.  Grandmother Victoria forced him to take over the traditional house of Hanover,  Coburg-Saxe and Gotha in Germany, despite his many protestations at age fifteen.

Charlie married the niece of Empress August of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenberg, Victoria Adelheid (Adelaide) and had five children including a daughter who married into the Swedish Royal Family and brought hemophilia to that Royal family.  He and his family remained loyal to the Kaiser during World War I while his sister who was married to the British Queen Mary’s brother, the Duke of Teck stayed on the British-Allied side of the Great War.

The Second Duke and his family remained loyal to the Kaiser during World War I while his sister who was married to the British Queen Mary’s brother, the Duke of Teck, stayed on the British-Allied side of the Great War.  It made lots of headlines.
