Debbie Reynolds was unfortunately in the news this past Christmas holiday, when her only daughter, Carrie Frances Fisher, had a heart attack on board a flight from London, the UK to Los Angeles, California.

The plane was forced to stopped but the fifteen minutes of getting Ms. Fisher to a hospital was too long, and a few days later, the sixty-year-old actress died.Ms. Reynolds was discussing with her only son, Todd Fisher, his sister’s funeral when she collapsed saying “I miss her so” and died several hours later of a cerebral stroke.  She was 84.  Only her son, Todd, and her granddaughter, Billie, survive her.

We were not alone in being saddened by the news, nor we were probably alone in searching for their birth data.  We found Ms. Reynold’s data on the late Lois Rodden’s site and were impressed at first, but then when checking it against the symbols, we were thought it a bit off.

We reviewed the symbols, and the aspects, and rectified Miss Reynold’s Ascendant from 6 Libra, The ideals of a man abundantly crystallized to 8 Libra, A blazing fireplace in a deserted old home.

We found the critical aspects in Ms. Reynolds, were a bit broad to fully captured her fierce loyalty to the people in her world, but that they worked. First & most notably is her relationship with her daughter Carrie and her strong reaction to the latter’s sudden demise.  Second her spontaneous  reunion with her old but estranged friend Elizabeth Taylor.  These episodes, as well as her exuberant film career, exemplify, the joyousness of a firecracker.

                          Fire gives warmth

With that idea in mind, it was easy to rectify Miss Reynold’s Ascendant from 6 Libra, The ideals of a man abundantly crystallized to 8 Libra, A blazing fireplace in a deserted old home.  Our reasoning is that we see here a bundle of naïve energy that burst upon the Hollywood stage, full of cardinal warmth and devoted loyalty to the people in her world coming as she did from a staunch Pentecostal home in El Paso, Texas.

Son Todd, Debby and Carrie

Marc Edmund Jones gives 8 Libra the keyword of  Guardianship, a person who is guardian, protector,  and caregiver of their charge.  That is very akin to her role as a single mother raising her two young children after her husband, crooner Eddie Fisher deserted her for Elizabeth Taylor.   Her fierce reaction to her daughter Carrie’s sudden demise, as though she had been negligent in some way.

Years later, Debby and daughter Carrie.

Her horoscope shows us through the aspects to personal yod (she has two) that either of her children’s death would have exacted the same toll as she was first and last,  a devoted mother.

A Seesaw with 2 yods

Miss Reynolds is a seesaw temperament type which disposes her to be more mutable than her chart would allow.  This showed up in her favour as being a versatile performer:  she sang, danced, and acted and won plaudits for her varied work.  Her fiery temperament was often capitalized in her various roles:  the Tammy series,   The Unsinkable Molly Brown,  How the West Was Won,  and the fabulous Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly.

As her Seesaw yields two yods, they have to be addressed as each one is in a different part of her hourglass configuration .  The top one in her Southern hemisphere, is in her  public life using the Midheaven as one arm and Neptune (doing double duty) as the other.  The foot to this group is dreamy Moon (Aquarius 27.52).  Its midpoint is appropriately enough, her Part of Fortune at 22.55 Leo, with the Keyword of Audacity and the symbol of a “bareback rider.”

The second yod is has its apex at Saturn, where she was both mother and father to her two children, Carrie and Todd, after her gigolo husband the crooner Eddie Fisher ran off with the grieving Elizabeth Taylor abandoned them.  You can read about it (shorter version) here .   Its  midpoint is in dutiful Neptune (Virgo 05.42)  as it forced her to become a single mother in the symbolic “merry go-round” of what is life.

That Saturn, making her sensitive to her home life, is semi-sextile (the keyword here is agreement) to the Moon in the fifth house (28 Aquarius, keyword immediacy) and sextile (the keyword for sextiles is Understanding)  to Mars (29 Pisces, keyword Validation)  in the sixth house of work and health.  If one steps back for a second and sees the Moon as Carrie and Mars as Todd, we see how interlinked she was to them.

RIP, Debbie.  We’ll miss you.

Our featured photo is of her and Cesare Romano in “The Devil is a Woman” directed by Josef von Sternberg. It was her favorite film because it made her look “beautiful.”  You can watch it here and see if you agree.

Marlene Dietrich, a German femme fatale, is also a mutable hourglass. Like Joseph Haydn, she has a Virgo Ascendant, but her hourglass runs totally contrary to his.  While he has a singleton in the third quadrant of spirituality; she has nothing.  She was a professed atheist though born and raised Roman Catholic.  Where Haydn has plenty of planets in the first quadrant of intellectual endeavour, Ms. Dietrich is empty.

The bottom of her hourglass ends right on the the cusp of her Seventh House of Aquarius, with Venus standing tall.  Perhaps this gives added weight to her comment, supported by her daughter,  that she was bisexual.   This would not be notable except its part of the cutting pair (hourglasses are like scissors with two blades) and the only planet in the third quadrant.  The bottom part of the blade is Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, in the fourth house of home affairs.

Maria Elisabeth Sieber Riva, Dietrich’s daughter

  • “As a child I thought my name was ‘Maria The-Daughter-Of’.”
  • I think I wanted to be a teacher, or something important. My mother didn’t force me into anything.
  • Most of my dear friends came from my mother’s lovers. I had a lot of strange fathers; some of them were women, some of them were men.

She married director Rudolf Sieber in 1923 and they had an open relationship, allowing each other lovers. With him, she had her one and only child  Maria Elisabeth who was also born in Berlin on December 13, 1924.  Miss Sieber was known professionally as Maria Riva.

Her planetary emphasis runs towards creativity and self-expression that she nurtured incessantly, almost narcissistically, reading her daughter’s accounts.  As a singer and actress, she went on USO tours during World War II and raised War Bonds.  In 1992 when she was 92 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for those efforts.

Pluto on the cusp of Gemini and Taurus bestowed her a smoky  voice and a curvaceous figure. Her Neptune (29.56 in mutable Gemini)  suggests she took great pains in protecting her assets and for her traveling was just a matter of course (those many planets in Sagittarius).

Her Line of Personality is conjunct (Saturn Jupiter  in Capricorn) making her someone who was very much part of her times (1930s-1940s Hollywood) and a wise investor — she was known to be penurious and left her daughter a fortune.  Her Line of Vitality also conjunct,  bestowed a long life.  She has no major aspect to either to her Lines of Efficiency, definitely not her thing as Marc Jones writes “that these people are not concerned with daily details”, which is probably true as she had people for that;  nor does she have a Line of Culture, that Jones later re-termed Social Significance because they are outer planets.  For this lack, he writes, this is a person not particularly concerned with the socioeconomic troubles of their fellow man.

Marlene Dietrich’s natal chart progressed to her date of death.

The Times Obit…

“Marlene Dietrich is a professional,” Alfred Hitchcock once said. “She’s a professional actress, a professional wardrober, a professional lighting technician. . . .” Hitchcock knew his subject well, having directed her in “Stage Fright” (1950), in which she introduced one of her favorite cabaret songs, “The Laziest Girl in Town.” Dietrich was a professional just-about-everything because of her many planets from the sixth to the eighth house in the area of work, opportunities and legacy, she wanted to make sure evveryone was doing their best to ensure hers.

According to one of her associates, at least part of the reason for her dazzling figure was a tip-to-toe flesh-colored body-stocking with the tensile strength of steel. Artifice was her fine art shown by transpluto in the sixth ; she took no chances.

PS.  At her time of death, her progressed Saturn, Father Time, was trine her natal Midheaven.  Her progressed Ceres was conjunct it and the Nodes were activated to the Ascendant.

Her real name was Harriette Lake.  She took Ann from her mother and Sothern from the great Shakespearean actor, E. H. Sothern.  I happened to catch her last night on a Alfred Hitchcock Present TV program with John Cassavettes called “Waters Edge.” She was a solid actress, a good comedienne — she was best friends with Lucille Ball and in a two year period made eighteen films.   She died in Ketchum, Idaho March 15,2001 at 92.

You can read her whole obituary over here at the New York Times.  All of this reminded me how much I adored her when I was young, so after seeing the Hitchcock show, I rectified her chart.  Sometimes you cannot help yourself, it is such a fun hobby.  I heartily recommend it.

                      What the Chart says

Her Ascendant at 26 Pisces according to McClung’s Hyperion Symbols is “School boys kicking a soccer ball” and suggest creative resources that motivates the native to undreamt goals.  Despite her Pisces ascendant, she is heavily Air and Earth, that gives her a cool practicality.

She has a Splay/Tripod Temperament Type that also helps keep her grounded; she looks more to her own sense of fulfillment in her work than applause.  She has a strong Line of Vitality that makes sense because of her great health and long life.  Her Line of Personality is in opposition that according to Mark Edmund Jones suggests she   acts responsibly and has no problem with hard work.

Her acting persona tapped into her need to search for truth in expression (Pluto 24.10 Gemini, third house).  Sextile her Neptune in the fourth, she found that this career, Venus in the tenth opposite her Neptune in the fourth, was taxing to her normally happy self, and probably resulted in her drinking.  Billy the Kidd, the famous outlaw, has a similarly afflicted Neptune.  Her Mercury in the twelfth house,  that silvery lord of Gemini, suggests that her work lives beyond her:  adventure writer Jack London has a similar Mercury but no corresponding Line of Vitality and drank himself to death at half her age.

You can see more of Anne and other vintage Hollywood beauties over here on Photobucket.  Makes me think I will watch the Ann Sothern Show today; I have never seen it, but the episode Touch of Larceny looks promising. Click here and you can join me.
